Is hemophilia a sex-linked genetic disorder?
Disease description:
I have hemophilia and really want to have a child with my wife. I would like to know whether hemophilia is a sex-linked genetic disorder.
Hemophilia is a sex-linked genetic disorder. Since the hemophilia gene is located on the X chromosome, hemophilia is classified as an X-linked recessive inherited disease. This means that hemophilia patients are almost exclusively male, while female patients are extremely rare. There are two types of hemophilia: hemophilia A and hemophilia B. For treatment of hemophilia, whether it is hemophilia A or B, recombinant factor replacement therapy is available. Individuals planning to have children must undergo thorough medical examinations before and during pregnancy.
