Holding urine can cause bladder pain. The first step is to empty the bladder; applying a hot water bottle to the lower abdomen may also help relieve local muscle tension. When the bladder becomes overly full from holding urine, it stimulates the pelvic nerves and causes pain. In most cases, the pain subsides once urine is voided. Frequently holding urine can easily lead to cystitis, and repeated inflammatory stimulation may result in spasmodic pain at the bladder outlet.
