What is a boil?
Disease description:
I don't know what's going on these past couple of days, but a big lump has appeared on my buttocks and it's very painful. My mom says it might be a "huo jie zi." What exactly is a "huo jie zi"?
A boil, medically known as a furuncle or furunculosis, is an acute bacterial suppurative inflammation of a single hair follicle and the surrounding tissue. The primary cause is infection by Staphylococcus aureus, although it may occasionally be caused by other bacteria such as Staphylococcus epidermidis or streptococci. Boils tend to develop when the skin is scratched or abraded, in hot environments, with excessive sweating, or due to poor hygiene practices. Individuals with weakened immune systems, chronic alcohol users, and those suffering from other skin conditions are more susceptible. Boils commonly occur on the head, face, neck, and buttocks, presenting as small, red, swollen, warm, and painful nodules. A central pus-filled point typically forms within the nodule, which gradually enlarges and becomes increasingly painful. After rupture, pus is discharged, followed by gradual resolution of pain and swelling, leading to healing. For more severe cases, treatment may include topical antibiotic ointments, oral medications, or surgical intervention. Untreated boils on the face may lead to serious complications.
