Can children with diarrhea eat spinach?
Disease description:
My child has diarrhea today, but during lunch he wanted to eat spinach. Can children with diarrhea eat spinach?
During episodes of diarrhea in children, it is recommended to temporarily avoid consuming excessive amounts of spinach to prevent worsening of diarrhea symptoms. Spinach is rich in nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and fiber, and for healthy children, moderate consumption is beneficial to their health. However, the situation is different for children with diarrhea. Spinach contains relatively high levels of dietary fiber, which may accelerate intestinal motility, and excessive fiber intake could potentially exacerbate diarrhea symptoms. Additionally, the oxalic acid in spinach may bind with calcium in the body to form calcium oxalate, a substance that is difficult to absorb, thereby affecting calcium absorption, which could be detrimental to growing children. If needed, spinach can be given in moderation after diarrhea symptoms have subsided. Meanwhile, a child's diet should primarily consist of bland, easily digestible foods, avoiding greasy and irritating foods.
