Lupus erythematosus has a significant hereditary component, but not all offspring of affected individuals will develop the condition, as its occurrence is also influenced by various other factors. 1. Genetic probability: Lupus erythematosus, especially systemic lupus erythematosus, has a genetic probability of about 43%, approximately double that of the general population. 2. Family aggregation: Among first-degree relatives of individuals with lupus erythematosus, there is a 5% to 10% chance of developing the condition. 3. Gender differences: The disease prevalence in girls is approximately 10%, compared to about 2% in boys, suggesting that gender may also influence genetic risk. 4. Twin studies: If one fraternal twin has lupus erythematosus, the other twin has about a 5% to 10% chance of also having lupus erythematosus; if one identical twin is affected, the other twin has a probability of being affected as high as two-thirds.
