What medication is used for a stye?
Disease description:
I have developed several small bumps under my eye, each one separate. The doctor diagnosed it as a stye (hordeolum) and I would like to know what medication is best for treating a stye?
A hordeolum, also known as stye, is usually caused by a bacterial infection of the glands at the edge of the eyelid. The following measures can be taken in the early stages:
1. Warm compress: Apply a warm towel to the affected area 3-4 times daily for 15-20 minutes each time, to help reduce swelling and promote drainage of pus.
2. Topical antibiotic ointment: A doctor may prescribe antibiotic eye ointment, such as erythromycin eye ointment, to be applied to the affected area according to the prescribed frequency.
3. Oral antibiotics: If the inflammation is severe or persistent, oral antibiotics, such as cephalosporins or penicillins, may be required, but must be taken under medical guidance.
4. Avoid squeezing: Never squeeze the hordeolum yourself, to prevent the infection from spreading to surrounding tissues or causing more serious complications.
If the hordeolum continues to enlarge, becomes increasingly painful, or develops a pus head, immediate medical attention should be sought.
