Disease description:

I'm not sure if it was because my ears got water in them when I went swimming last week, but now there is pus inside. I'd like to ask the doctor, how is pus in the ear treated?

The presence of pus in the ear may indicate symptoms of either external otitis (swimmer's ear) or otitis media (middle ear infection), both of which are usually caused by bacterial or fungal infections. Do not attempt to clean the ear yourself with cotton swabs or other objects, as this may worsen the infection or damage the ear canal. Below are some basic management steps and recommendations: 1. Seek medical examination: Visit an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist promptly. The doctor will use specialized equipment to examine your ear, determine the cause, and provide appropriate treatment. 2. Antibiotic treatment: If the infection is bacterial, the doctor may prescribe oral antibiotics or topical ear drops. Take the medication exactly as directed. 3. Pain relief: If you experience pain, over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen may be used to alleviate discomfort. 4. Keep the ear dry: Avoid getting water in the ear, especially during swimming or bathing. Earplugs can be used for protection. 5. Avoid ear picking: Stop using cotton swabs or other objects to clean the ear canal, as this may aggravate the inflammation. 6. Follow-up visits: Attend follow-up appointments as recommended by your doctor to ensure the infection is controlled and fully resolved. Note: If symptoms such as high fever, worsening ear pain, hearing loss, or foul-smelling pus develop, seek immediate medical attention.
