Disease description:

Yesterday, I got drunk and had sex with a stranger. I’m very worried she might have HIV, but we used a condom during intercourse. Does using a condom prevent HIV infection?

It is possible—though unlikely—to contract HIV even when using a condom; the estimated risk is approximately 1%. Thus, the probability of HIV infection while using a condom correctly is low. However, infection may occur if the condom breaks or slips off during intercourse—especially due to excessive movement—thereby exposing the uninfected partner to the bodily fluids (e.g., semen, vaginal fluid, or blood) of an HIV-positive individual.
