Can port-wine stains be completely cured?
Disease description:
My newborn niece has a prominent port-wine stain on her face. We’ve tried several pigment-lightening treatments, but the mark hasn’t faded. I’d like to ask: Can port-wine stains be completely cured?
Hello,
Port-wine stains (nevus flammeus) are a common condition observed in many newborns. They primarily result from the gradual accumulation of various hormones during fetal development in utero, which can lead to the appearance of port-wine stains on certain areas of the infant’s body.
Port-wine stains can be effectively removed later through surgical or laser treatment; however, such procedures are typically deferred until the infant is older and better able to tolerate them. With appropriate, standardized postoperative care and follow-up, port-wine stains can be completely eliminated, and recurrence is unlikely.
I hope this information is helpful to you. Wishing you and your baby good health!
