Why Do Newborn Babies Hiccup?
Disease description:
I’ve just given birth, and my baby always hiccups after feeding. Why do newborns hiccup?
Hiccups in newborns are typically caused by spasms of the diaphragm. Since the gastrointestinal tract of newborns is still immature and positioned horizontally, exposure to cold or wind, or excessive air ingestion, can trigger diaphragmatic spasms—resulting in hiccups. Improper feeding practices may also contribute; for instance, overfeeding can likewise cause hiccups in infants.
