Symptoms and Treatment of Chickenpox in Adults
Disease description:
I’ve had a fever these past few days, and numerous blisters have appeared on my body. My doctor diagnosed me with chickenpox, and I’d like to recover as soon as possible. I’d like to ask: What are the symptoms and treatment options for chickenpox in adults?
Hello,
Chickenpox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus and commonly occurs during childhood; adult cases tend to be somewhat more severe. The primary symptoms of chickenpox include fever, loss of appetite, and the subsequent appearance of itchy, red papules. These lesions gradually spread to the waist and back as small red spots. There is no specific antiviral treatment for chickenpox; therefore, isolation is essential to prevent transmission to others. If fever is high, antipyretics may be used. Avoid scratching the lesions to prevent secondary bacterial infection. Maintain good personal hygiene—bathe regularly and change clothes frequently. Do not take corticosteroids, and avoid consuming greasy foods, eggs, or seafood. Ensure adequate rest, and antibiotics may be prescribed if a secondary bacterial infection develops.
