Adverse effects of glucocorticoids may include infections or gastrointestinal dyspepsia, insomnia or “steroid-induced facial swelling” (commonly referred to as “moon face”), and even elevated blood pressure or blood glucose levels. Prolonged glucocorticoid use may lead to hypertension and hyperglycemia, often accompanied by neuropsychiatric adverse effects. There are numerous types of glucocorticoid medications; commonly used examples include prednisone.
