Goji berries, as a food and medicinal ingredient with dual uses, are generally beneficial to human health when consumed in moderation. However, excessive or inappropriate intake may lead to certain adverse effects. Goji berries are considered “warm” in nature according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM); overconsumption may cause “internal heat,” manifesting as symptoms such as oral ulcers and sore throat. Additionally, goji berries contain a certain amount of natural sugars; thus, excessive intake may cause blood glucose fluctuations in individuals with diabetes. While goji berries possess liver- and kidney-tonifying properties, individuals with irritable temperaments, hypertension, or those suffering from colds or febrile illnesses should consume them with caution, as they may exacerbate existing conditions. Moreover, goji berries may trigger allergic reactions—including skin rashes and pruritus—in susceptible individuals. For people with weak spleen and stomach function, excessive consumption may increase gastrointestinal burden and potentially induce diarrhea. When consuming goji berries, it is advisable to adjust intake according to one’s individual constitution and health status, while closely monitoring bodily responses. Should any discomfort occur, prompt medical consultation is recommended.
