Is a higher tissue typing score better for kidney transplantation?
Disease description:
My younger brother has been diagnosed with uremia and needs to undergo HLA typing before kidney transplantation. Could you please tell me: Is a higher HLA matching score always better for kidney transplantation?
Renal transplant compatibility testing requires a lymphocyte cytotoxicity crossmatch test, with a result of ≤10% (negative). Panel reactive antibody (PRA) testing in renal transplant recipients must also yield a negative result. HLA typing involves six loci; a higher number of matched HLA loci is preferable. ABO blood group compatibility is essential—renal transplantation is generally contraindicated if blood types are incompatible. Following renal transplantation, patients typically experience significant improvement in quality of life. Postoperatively, patients should rest in bed and initially consume only liquid diets, gradually transitioning to a normal diet.
