Doctor, I’ve never donated blood before, let alone platelets. Could you please tell me what the benefits of platelet donation are?

Dr. Kou Linlin
Platelet donation offers benefits such as reducing blood viscosity and cholesterol levels, thereby helping to prevent cardiovascular diseases. However, excessive platelet donation may lead to reduced blood volume and dizziness. Platelet donation is a type of blood donation—also known as component donation. In contrast, conventional (whole) blood donation involves withdrawing whole blood, which contains red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. During platelet donation, blood is drawn from the donor and processed via automated centrifugation to isolate platelets; the remaining blood components are then returned to the donor’s body. This process—comprising blood draw, centrifugation, separation, platelet collection, and reinfusion of residual components—is repeated continuously until the required quantity of platelets is obtained.
