Introduction
Astragalus root and Ophiopogon tuber possess health-promoting and therapeutic effects, nourishing kidney yin and tonifying qi. Astragalus contains active constituents such as saponins and astragalus polysaccharides; in diabetic patients, it can stimulate insulin secretion and exert a modest blood glucose–lowering effect. When using astragalus to regulate blood circulation in diabetic patients, it is commonly combined with Trichosanthes root, Rehmannia root, and Anemarrhena rhizome. Diabetic patients may also drink moderate amounts of tea brewed from Ophiopogon tuber.

Some individuals with diabetes regularly drink herbal infusions made from Ophiopogon (Maidong), Astragalus (Huangqi), and Codonopsis (Dangshen). So, can people with diabetes safely consume this combination?

Can people with diabetes consume Ophiopogon, Astragalus, and Codonopsis?

Astragalus and Ophiopogon possess health-promoting and therapeutic properties, including nourishing kidney yin and tonifying qi. Astragalus contains bioactive compounds such as saponins and astragalus polysaccharides; in diabetic patients, it may stimulate insulin secretion and exert a modest blood glucose–lowering effect. When using Astragalus for blood regulation in diabetes, it is commonly combined with other herbs such as Trichosanthes root (Tianhuafen), Rehmannia root (Dihuang), and Anemarrhena rhizome (Zhimu). Patients with type 1 diabetes require exogenous insulin therapy, whereas most patients with type 2 diabetes can be managed with oral hypoglycemic agents—though a minority may need combination therapy with both oral agents and insulin.

Pharmacotherapy also plays an important role in diabetes management. In addition to medication, dietary and lifestyle interventions constitute essential components of comprehensive diabetes care. Individuals experiencing symptoms suggestive of diabetes should seek evaluation at a reputable medical institution. Strict adherence to prescribed oral antidiabetic medications is critical. Furthermore, dietary control and regular physical activity are indispensable elements of holistic diabetes management.

People with diabetes may consume moderate amounts of Ophiopogon tea. Clinical observation suggests that drinking Ophiopogon tea generally causes minimal fluctuations in blood glucose levels. However, some diabetic patients may experience throat discomfort or other mild adverse effects after consuming Ophiopogon. If Ophiopogon alleviates these symptoms, antimicrobial agents should be avoided unless clearly indicated, to prevent unnecessary or inappropriate antibiotic use.
