Introduction
Drug Allergy Symptoms: 1. Cutaneous allergic reactions, including rash, pruritus, and fever—these may occur simultaneously or individually, with rash being the most common manifestation and presenting in various forms; 2. Respiratory obstruction symptoms, such as chest tightness, shortness of breath, laryngeal obstruction, dyspnea, asphyxia, and cyanosis; 3. Neurological and psychiatric disturbances, including hyperreflexia and sensory disturbances; 4. Anaphylactic shock.

Drug-induced allergy—also known as drug hypersensitivity—is an allergic reaction triggered by medication administration, including oral, injectable, and topical agents. Two essential factors are required for drug allergy to occur: a predisposed atopic constitution and exposure to the offending drug. So, what are the symptoms of drug allergy? Below is an overview.



Symptoms of Drug Allergy

1. Cutaneous Allergic Reactions

Skin rashes, pruritus (itching), and fever may occur simultaneously or independently; among these, rashes are the most common manifestation and may present in various forms—including erythematous macules, papules, and urticarial wheals. Severe cases, such as toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) and exfoliative dermatitis, can be life-threatening. Additionally, allergic purpura may develop alongside other allergic manifestations.

2. Respiratory Obstruction Symptoms

Drug-induced allergy may cause laryngeal edema and bronchospasm, leading to respiratory obstruction symptoms such as chest tightness, shortness of breath, laryngeal obstruction, dyspnea, asphyxia, and cyanosis. Furthermore, depending on the severity of the allergic reaction, patients may subsequently develop tachycardia and hypotension.



3. Neurological and Psychiatric Disturbances

Neurological and psychiatric symptoms may include hyperreflexia, sensory disturbances, seizures, and somnolence; these typically resolve upon drug discontinuation or dose reduction. Central nervous system manifestations—including loss of consciousness, coma, convulsions, and urinary or fecal incontinence—may result from cerebral hypoxia. In rare cases, patients may develop long-term sequelae such as aphasia, hemiplegia, or Parkinson’s syndrome.

4. Anaphylactic Shock

Anaphylactic shock is a severe, systemic, hypersensitivity reaction triggered within minutes by the entry of certain antigenic substances into a previously sensitized individual, mediated via immunological mechanisms. It typically occurs abruptly and with high severity; without prompt intervention, it poses a significant threat to life. Penicillin-containing medications are the most common cause of anaphylactic shock, although certain foods may also provoke severe allergic reactions.
