Introduction
It is difficult to compare whether hypotension or hypertension is more severe, as the key factor lies in the degree to which blood pressure is lowered or elevated. If blood pressure falls below 90/60 mmHg—particularly if systolic pressure drops below 80 mmHg—it indicates shock. In such cases, failure to provide timely resuscitation may even endanger the patient’s life.

Abnormal blood pressure responses naturally impact human health. In daily life, many individuals develop various complications due to either hypertension or hypotension. Therefore, we must pay special attention to blood pressure in our everyday routines and understand the relevant standard values; otherwise, unnecessary health consequences may arise. So, which is more serious—hypotension or hypertension?

Which Is More Serious: Hypotension or Hypertension?

It is difficult to directly compare the severity of hypotension versus hypertension, as the key factor lies in the degree to which blood pressure deviates—either dropping too low or rising too high. For instance, if blood pressure falls below 90/60 mmHg—and especially if systolic pressure drops below 80 mmHg—this indicates shock. Without prompt medical intervention, such a condition can even become life-threatening. Conversely, extremely elevated blood pressure—particularly when systolic pressure exceeds 190 mmHg, or even 200 mmHg—can lead to severe complications such as intracerebral hemorrhage or acute heart failure. Thus, hypertension, too, can be highly dangerous.

On the other hand, mild reductions or mild elevations in blood pressure are generally not considered serious. Therefore, determining which condition is more severe depends entirely on the specific blood pressure readings—and cannot be generalized.

We recommend that patients maintain healthy lifestyle habits, follow a light and balanced diet, avoid spicy or irritating foods, and ensure adequate sleep each day. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
