Introduction
Nao Li Qing is a traditional Chinese patent medicine that can alleviate insomnia symptoms. However, it is not primarily used clinically for the treatment of insomnia. Nao Li Qing is mainly indicated for patients with hyperactivity of liver-yang presenting with irritability, bitter taste in the mouth, dizziness, tinnitus, and difficulty falling asleep. Its principal ingredients include Concha Margaritifera (Zhumu), Rhizoma Pinelliae (Banxia), and Haematitum (Zheshi). It functions to subdue hyperactive liver-yang, clear heat, promote diuresis, and relieve pain.

Insomnia appears to have become a prevalent condition among modern individuals—afflicting both young adults and middle-aged or older adults alike. Undoubtedly, insomnia exerts significant adverse effects on patients’ physical and mental health. To effectively address this issue, one must first understand the defining symptoms of insomnia. So, does Naoliqing (a traditional Chinese medicine) treat insomnia?

Does Naoliqing Treat Insomnia?

Naoliqing is a proprietary Chinese herbal formula that may help alleviate insomnia symptoms. However, it is not primarily indicated for insomnia in clinical practice. Instead, Naoliqing is mainly prescribed for patients with “excess Liver Yang,” presenting with irritability, bitter taste in the mouth, dizziness, tinnitus, and difficulty falling asleep. Its principal ingredients include *Concha Margaritifera* (pearl shell), *Pinellia Ternata* (pinellia rhizome), and *Haematitum* (hematite). Naoliqing functions to subdue hyperactive Liver Yang, clear heat, promote urination, and relieve pain—making it especially suitable for clinical cases featuring dizziness and vertigo. If insomnia stems specifically from excess Liver Yang, clinicians may recommend oral administration of Zhusha Anshen Wan (Cinnabar Pacifying Spirit Pills) or Longdan Xiegan Wan (Gentiana Liver-Draining Pills), which clear damp-heat from the Liver and Gallbladder.

Individuals with insomnia may benefit from consuming certain foods, such as millet, walnuts, lily bulbs, sour jujube seeds (*Ziziphi Spinosae Semen*), longan aril, lotus seeds, red dates, and goat’s milk. While no single food universally proves most effective for all insomnia sufferers, these nourishing foods can support heart health, calm the mind, and promote restful sleep. Selection should be tailored to individual constitution—for example, those with blood deficiency may benefit from longan aril, while those with yin deficiency may prefer lily bulbs and sour jujube seeds. Patients should choose based on personal response, as the efficacy of dietary interventions for sleep support varies from person to person.

We recommend that patients cultivate healthy sleep habits and avoid staying up late. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
