Symptoms of Kidney Yin Deficiency and Kidney Yang Deficiency
The health of the kidneys directly affects the abundance or deficiency of essence (Jing), Qi, and blood. Once kidney deficiency occurs, the body manifests a series of symptoms. Particularly in men, poor kidney function often correlates with diminished sexual function. Kidney deficiency is further classified in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) into two main patterns: Kidney Yang Deficiency and Kidney Yin Deficiency. So, what are the distinguishing symptoms of Kidney Yin Deficiency and Kidney Yang Deficiency?
Symptoms of Kidney Yin Deficiency and Kidney Yang Deficiency
Both Kidney Yin Deficiency and Kidney Yang Deficiency are TCM diagnostic patterns. Kidney Yang Deficiency refers to a pattern of “deficient cold” caused by insufficiency of Kidney Yang and diminished warming function; Kidney Yin Deficiency refers to a pattern of “deficient heat” resulting from insufficient Kidney Yin and internal disturbance by deficient fire. Clinically, Kidney Yang Deficiency commonly presents with soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees, diminished libido, frequent nocturia, and in women, cold uterus leading to infertility. In men, it may cause erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, constipation, or early-morning diarrhea. Kidney Yin Deficiency commonly manifests as low-back and lumbar soreness, seminal emission in men, excessive menstrual bleeding in women, dizziness, tinnitus, dry mouth and throat, insomnia with poor memory, tidal fever, and night sweats.

Kidney Yang Deficiency typically presents with aversion to cold—such as generalized cold sensation—along with low-back soreness, fatigue, lassitude, shortness of breath, reluctance to speak, frequent urination, and loose stools. In men, it may lead to erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, or seminal emission; in women, it may cause dysmenorrhea, irregular menstruation, cold uterus with infertility, pale tongue with white coating, and a slow, weak pulse. Kidney Yin Deficiency may present with heat sensations in the palms, soles, and chest (“five-center heat”), tidal fever, and night sweats.
