Renal hypertension can be treated with medications and surgery. In managing renal hypertension, the underlying kidney disease causing the hypertension should be addressed first. If renal artery stenosis is present, it can be treated via interventional procedures—such as stent placement—or through surgery to resect the stenotic segment of the renal artery, thereby alleviating the stenosis and curing renal hypertension.

Renal hypertension is also a common form of secondary hypertension, with diverse underlying causes. Currently, numerous medical treatment options—primarily pharmacological—are available. So, how is renal hypertension treated?

How Is Renal Hypertension Treated?

Renal hypertension can be managed through both medication and surgery. In treating renal hypertension, the primary focus should be on addressing the underlying kidney disease causing the elevated blood pressure. For instance, if renal artery stenosis is present, interventional therapy (e.g., stent placement) or surgical resection of the stenotic segment of the renal artery may be performed to alleviate the narrowing and thereby resolve the renal hypertension. If renal hypertension results from an adrenal tumor, surgical removal of the tumor is the only effective means to control the hypertension.

Common causes of renal hypertension include chronic glomerulonephritis, renal insufficiency, and renal failure. When kidney disease occurs, the renin-angiotensin system becomes activated, leading to vasoconstriction and increased blood pressure. Additionally, reduced glomerular filtration capacity results in water and sodium retention, contributing to volume-dependent hypertension. Pharmacological treatment must therefore be tailored according to disease severity.

In daily life, patients should restrict dietary salt and fluid intake and consume more fresh vegetables and fruits—especially those high in dietary fiber. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
