Introduction
Persistent tinnitus may be caused by the presence of a foreign body in the ear canal. When experiencing tinnitus, it is important to determine whether it is related to local foreign-body irritation. Many individuals develop tinnitus due to impacted cerumen (earwax), external auditory canal masses, or other foreign bodies. Therefore, it is essential to assess whether recurrent tinnitus is associated with such adverse influences on the external auditory canal.

Many elderly individuals commonly experience recurrent tinnitus. So, what causes persistent tinnitus?

What Causes Persistent Tinnitus?

Persistent tinnitus may result from the presence of a foreign body in the ear canal. When evaluating tinnitus, it is essential to determine whether it is related to local foreign-body irritation. For instance, impacted cerumen (earwax blockage), external auditory canal tumors, or other foreign bodies can all trigger tinnitus. Therefore, it is crucial to assess whether frequent tinnitus episodes are associated with such adverse influences on the external auditory canal—enabling timely intervention to alleviate this symptom.

Certain localized inflammatory conditions may also cause tinnitus—for example, otosclerosis or various types of otitis media. In addition to hearing impairment, these disorders often present tinnitus as a distinct clinical feature. Thus, treatment must target the underlying etiology specifically; tinnitus should not be simplistically attributed to “kidney deficiency” alone, as it may instead signal one of these pathological conditions.

In many cases, tinnitus in older adults stems from presbycusis (age-related hearing loss). As hearing declines with age, tinnitus may concurrently worsen. It is therefore vital to determine whether hearing loss has developed. Without accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment, inappropriate interventions—such as indiscriminate medication use or therapies aimed solely at “kidney deficiency”—may exacerbate the condition and hinder recovery of auditory health.
