Life Expectancy After Heart Stent Surgery
The life expectancy of patients following coronary stent placement should be evaluated from the following perspectives:

1. Stent longevity: After stent implantation, patients must undergo standardized pharmacotherapy—particularly dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT)—which is especially critical for drug-eluting stents (DES). With appropriate medical management, the vast majority of stents remain patent. However, due to individual patient factors—including inherent biological variability—even the highest-quality stents may experience late-stage neointimal hyperplasia, potentially leading to in-stent restenosis or progressive occlusion.
Currently, high-performance drug-eluting stents demonstrate an occlusion rate of less than 10% at 8–10 years post-implantation. Thus, most modern DES maintain excellent patency beyond 10 years—provided that patients adhere strictly and correctly to prescribed pharmacotherapy.

2. Patient survival post-stenting: With appropriate, ongoing medical management ensuring stent patency, adequate myocardial perfusion, and preserved cardiac function, stent placement has minimal impact on life expectancy. Patients can achieve a lifespan comparable to—or nearly equivalent to—that of healthy individuals of the same age. In China, the average life expectancy is approximately 80 years; under optimal conditions, this benchmark remains attainable.
