Symptoms of Yin Deficiency and Yang Deficiency
Yin deficiency and yang deficiency are common syndromes in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), yet most people lack a clear understanding of them—and particularly of how they differ. Although yin and yang deficiencies often do not cause pronounced discomfort, they can severely impair overall health and progressively weaken one’s constitution. So, what are the symptoms of yin deficiency and yang deficiency?
Symptoms of Yin Deficiency and Yang Deficiency
Yang deficiency reflects insufficient yang function. Since yang qi provides warmth and nourishment, its deficiency may manifest as cold intolerance, cold limbs, general fatigue, and diminished vitality. Yang qi also governs vaporization and transformation—essential processes for regulating body fluids. When yang qi is deficient, impaired vaporization may lead to fluid retention, edema, obstruction of the meridians, swelling, and discomfort. In contrast, yin deficiency primarily results from inadequate yin fluids. Early signs may include dry eyes, dry mouth, a parched tongue, and generalized fluid depletion. As yin deficiency progresses, it may generate relative excess heat (“deficiency fire”), causing symptoms such as heat sensations in the palms and soles, chest and abdominal heat (i.e., “five-center heat”), night sweats, insomnia, irritability, and vivid or frequent dreams.

Yang deficiency specifically refers to kidney yang deficiency—a condition characterized by diminished kidney yang function and declining renal vitality. It commonly arises from constitutional factors, aging-related kidney decline, chronic disease–induced kidney damage, or excessive physical strain (e.g., overwork or prolonged household labor). Clinical manifestations include low back and knee weakness, aversion to cold, cold limbs—especially the lower extremities—ankle and calf edema and coldness, dizziness, lassitude, pallor, and, in severe cases, impotence or premature ejaculation.

Patients are advised to maintain a light, balanced diet and engage in moderate exercise to enhance immune function and overall resilience. We hope this information proves helpful.
