Can people with diabetes drink bayberry wine?
When diabetes is in its early stage and the condition is relatively stable, it is generally acceptable to drink bayberry wine, but only in moderation. However, if the diabetes is more severe, consuming bayberry wine is usually not recommended.
1. Bayberry wine may be consumed
If the type of diabetes is stage 1 and the disease is in its early phase, and the condition is well-controlled through a healthy diet and appropriate medication, drinking bayberry wine is generally permissible. This is because bayberry wine itself contains relatively low sugar content, and moderate consumption is unlikely to cause significant fluctuations in blood glucose levels.
2. Bayberry wine should not be consumed
If the patient has stage 2 diabetes, accompanied by unhealthy dietary habits—such as excessive intake of high-sugar foods—or if treatments with hypoglycemic medications like metformin or acarbose are ineffective, consuming bayberry wine is generally not advised. During this stage of the disease, strict control over sugar intake is required, and alcohol may cause blood vessel dilation and accelerate metabolism, potentially worsening the condition.
