How long after a meal should metformin sustained-release tablets be taken?
Metformin sustained-release tablets are generally taken half an hour after meals.
Metformin sustained-release tablets belong to the class of antihyperglycemic drugs. They can increase insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues and enhance glucose utilization in insulin-independent tissues. Additionally, they inhibit hepatic gluconeogenesis and reduce hepatic glucose output. Clinically, these tablets are commonly prescribed for patients with type 2 diabetes whose blood glucose levels cannot be controlled by diet and exercise alone. It is generally recommended to take the medication within half an hour after eating. This is because metformin has a relatively strong glucose-lowering effect; taking it on an empty stomach may cause gastrointestinal discomfort, while taking it during meals might lead to reduced efficacy due to food interactions. Taking the drug half an hour after meals typically maintains its effectiveness while minimizing adverse reactions.
When taking metformin sustained-release tablets, patients must not chew the tablets but swallow them whole. During treatment, regular monitoring of urine glucose, urine ketones, and fasting blood glucose is required, along with periodic assessment of serum creatinine and blood lactate levels.
