Introduction
The first week after childbirth is the golden period for women to discharge lochia. Some women experience prenatal edema and excess fluid, most of which is expelled during this first week. Therefore, it's advisable not to eat too much during this time, as overeating may interfere with complete lochia clearance. At this stage, new mothers can consume more pork liver—about 600 grams per day. Pork liver is warm in nature and slightly bitter in taste, rich in trace elements, niacin, and other nutrients. It helps nourish the liver, improve eyesight, and replenish qi and blood.

A woman begins her postpartum recovery, commonly known as "sitting the month," on the very first day after giving birth. Due to the physical weakness caused by childbirth, family members often provide the new mother with nourishing foods to help restore her vitality. So, what should one eat during this postpartum period?

What to Eat During the Postpartum Period

The first week after delivery is the golden period for women to expel lochia (postnatal discharge). Some women experience prenatal edema and excess fluid retention, most of which is discharged during this first week. Therefore, it's not advisable to eat too much during this time, as overeating may interfere with the complete expulsion of lochia. At this stage, pregnant women can consume more pork liver—about 600 grams per day. Pork liver is warm in nature and slightly bitter in taste, rich in trace elements and niacin. It helps nourish the liver, improve eyesight, and replenish blood and vital energy.

Starting from the second week, the amount of lochia significantly decreases and its color becomes less bright red. Most women experience backaches and soreness after childbirth. There’s a common saying, “Eat certain organs to nourish the corresponding body part,” so consuming pig kidneys (also called “waist flowers”) at this time can help relieve lower back discomfort. When stir-frying pig kidneys, family members can add Eucommia bark (Du Zhong) to enhance the therapeutic effect. Du Zhong is a sweet and warm herb known for strengthening tendons and bones and supporting kidney health.

For women recovering postpartum, balanced nutrition is actually the most important. Especially avoid overly greasy, heavily seasoned, or irritating foods. While stewed hen can help strengthen the body, eating too much may lead to excessive weight gain. Therefore, dietary adjustments during the postpartum period are essential—focus on wholesome staple foods and vegetables, use low-fat cooking methods, and avoid consuming excessive calories. We hope this information is helpful to you. Wishing you good health and happiness!
