Introduction
Patients should eat more foods rich in vitamin A, such as eggs and animal liver. To prevent night blindness, they should consume more fresh vegetables and fruits. Preventing night blindness requires a balanced diet. In addition to staple foods, patients should include fish, eggs, dairy products, animal organs, and fresh vegetables in their side dishes. For some patients with more severe conditions, prevention of night blindness may require bed rest.

In daily life, a small number of people may develop night blindness. What are the causes of night blindness?

Causes of Night Blindness

The clinical symptom of night blindness is reduced vision or inability to see in dim light. There are various causes of night blindness. First, vitamin A deficiency: the retina contains two types of cells—cone cells and rod cells. Rod cells are responsible for night vision. They contain a pigment called rhodopsin, which enables sensitivity to low light. The synthesis of rhodopsin requires vitamin A; therefore, insufficient vitamin A leads to night blindness. Second, zinc deficiency: lack of the mineral zinc can also cause night blindness. Zinc affects the normal metabolism and function of vitamin A, so night blindness may occur when zinc is deficient. Third, eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, and retinitis pigmentosa can lead to night blindness. Fourth, internal medical conditions like diabetes may damage blood vessels and nerves in the eye, resulting in night blindness.

A balanced diet is essential for prevention. In addition to staple foods, patients should include fish, eggs, dairy products, animal organs, and fresh vegetables in their diet. For patients with more severe conditions, bed rest may be necessary for preventing night blindness. Additionally, patients are encouraged to engage in outdoor physical activities, get exposure to sunlight, maintain personal hygiene, and prevent systemic diseases.
