Introduction
A normal kidney ultrasound does not necessarily mean the kidneys are truly healthy; routine urine analysis, kidney function tests, and pathological examinations are also needed for a comprehensive assessment. To evaluate kidney health, you can collect urine over a 24-hour period and have it tested, while simultaneously measuring creatinine levels in both urine and blood for comparison. Kidney function can then be assessed based on these test results.
B-ultrasound showing normal kidneys does not necessarily mean the kidneys are truly healthy. Comprehensive evaluation requires additional tests such as routine urinalysis, renal function tests, and pathological examinations.
1. Routine Urinalysis
This test helps detect conditions such as glomerulonephritis, proteinuria, inflammation, and tubular abnormalities. It can also be combined with blood tests to diagnose other kidney disorders. The test generally includes three components: microscopic examination, dipstick testing, and visual inspection. For accurate results, a midstream urine sample should be collected to avoid contamination.
2. Renal Function Tests
To assess kidney health, a 24-hour urine collection is often required. Levels of creatinine in both the urine and blood are measured and compared. Based on these results, doctors can determine whether kidney function is normal.
3. Pathological Examination
This involves a percutaneous renal biopsy. After obtaining a kidney tissue sample, special staining and processing are performed, followed by immunofluorescence studies, electron microscopy, and light microscopy to reach a definitive diagnosis.
