Introduction
Long-term inhalation of methanol generally does not cause cancer. However, prolonged exposure to methanol can affect the central nervous system, optic nerve, and retina, and may lead to conditions such as metabolic acidosis. Long-term inhalation of formaldehyde may also have certain adverse effects on the body, including reduced sensitivity and memory, dermatitis, and blistering reactions. It is recommended to avoid long-term exposure to formaldehyde.

1. Respiratory System

Inhaling large amounts of formaldehyde can cause bronchitis and pneumonia, resulting in severe clinical symptoms such as coughing, sputum production, and even fever. It may also trigger asthma attacks.

2. Central Nervous System

Long-term inhalation of formaldehyde may damage the nervous system, causing symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, insomnia, and drowsiness.

3. Retina and Optic Nerve

Eye contact with formaldehyde can easily lead to conjunctivitis or keratitis, causing symptoms such as eye redness, swelling, irritation, excessive tearing, photophobia, and secretion. There may also be punctate infiltration or cloudy spots on the cornea.

To remove formaldehyde, opening windows for ventilation is an option, although it usually takes a long time and has slow results; thus, it can be used as a supplementary method. Activated carbon can also be used to physically adsorb formaldehyde. Additionally, certain plants can help reduce formaldehyde levels through photosynthesis. It is recommended to avoid long-term inhalation of formaldehyde, as it can pose health risks to the body.
