How long does it take to test for the flu?
Influenza testing generally produces results within one day. There are two main methods for influenza testing: viral antigen testing and viral nucleic acid testing.
1. Viral Antigen Testing
Viral antigen testing usually involves collecting samples via throat or nasal swabs. Results are typically available within 30 minutes to an hour. This method uses test strips coated with antibodies to detect specific antigens. However, if the amount of antigen is very low, the test may fail to yield a positive result, leading to relatively lower accuracy.
2. Viral Nucleic Acid Testing
Viral nucleic acid testing isolates viral genetic material using magnetic separation technology and can detect various infectious diseases, including influenza. This method employs PCR amplification to determine the presence of viral nucleic acids in the sample. Magnetic beads labeled with specific probes selectively bind to target nucleic acids, allowing isolation through magnetic separation. Results from this method can be obtained as quickly as three hours, though they may take up to 24 hours—still all within a single day. Viral nucleic acid testing offers higher accuracy but is more costly and generally requires testing at a tertiary hospital.
If you unfortunately contract influenza, it is recommended to maintain good personal hygiene during treatment, eat light, easily digestible, and nutritious foods, avoid spicy and irritating foods, get plenty of rest, and avoid excessive fatigue.
