Can baijiu be consumed chilled?
Generally, it is not recommended to drink baijiu (Chinese白酒) chilled.
Baijiu contains certain components such as methanol and formaldehyde. Methanol may affect the nervous system, potentially causing symptoms of nerve paralysis, while formaldehyde can impair self-control and negatively impact health. When served warm, these harmful substances are more likely to evaporate; however, when the liquor is chilled, they are less likely to volatilize and thus enter the body with the alcohol, posing health risks. Additionally, baijiu itself is an irritant beverage. Drinking it with ice further intensifies irritation to the gastrointestinal tract, possibly leading to abdominal pain, diarrhea, indigestion, and similar symptoms. Long-term consumption in this manner may severely impair gastrointestinal function, reduce nutrient absorption, and ultimately result in malnutrition.
In daily life, avoid excessive alcohol consumption, as overdrinking can damage the spleen and stomach and lead to various diseases such as cerebrovascular disorders, liver cirrhosis, and gastritis. It is advisable to consume more fresh vegetables, fruits, and nutrient-rich foods like milk and eggs, while avoiding spicy and irritating foods.
