Can influenza and fever during pregnancy affect the fetus?
Generally, influenza with fever during pregnancy can have certain effects on the fetus.
When a pregnant woman contracts the flu, a large number of influenza viruses may be present in her body and could potentially pass through the bloodstream to the fetus, causing adverse effects on the developing baby. During treatment, medications are commonly used, which the fetus may absorb, possibly leading to abnormal neurological development. High fever in pregnant women may also affect the uterus, potentially causing intense uterine contractions, fetal demise, or even threatening miscarriage.
It is recommended that pregnant women experiencing fever increase fluid intake to promote metabolism and help alleviate symptoms. Wiping the body with lukewarm water may also help achieve localized cooling and prevent worsening fever from harming the fetus. Severe dehydration may lead to electrolyte imbalance and endocrine disorders.
