For patients with mid-to-late stage tongue cancer, surgery must be combined with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted drug therapy, and other treatments to control the disease and prevent cancer recurrence. With active treatment, the five-year survival rate for mid-to-late stage patients is approximately 60%.
Treatment methods for tongue cancer primarily depend on the pathological type and clinical staging of the cancer. For early-stage tongue cancer, surgical treatment is emphasized, including removal of the primary tumor, neck lymph node dissection, and flap reconstruction. Patients with early-stage disease generally have a relatively favorable prognosis. For mid-to-late stage tongue cancer, comprehensive treatment centered on surgery is recommended. After complete surgical resection and local flap repair, adjuvant therapies such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and biological targeted therapy are administered.
Tongue cancer is typically squamous cell carcinoma, which is not highly sensitive to chemotherapy. Radiotherapy tends to be more effective.
