If a patient's PaO₂ is between 61–81 mmHg and PaCO₂ is between 45–50 mmHg, this may indicate mild hypoxia. A PaO₂ of 46–61 mmHg and PaCO₂ of 51–56 mmHg may suggest moderate hypoxia. When PaO₂ falls below 46 mmHg and PaCO₂ exceeds 56 mmHg, it may indicate severe hypoxia.

There are two main causes of low carbon dioxide partial pressure. The first is excessive elimination of carbon dioxide, leading to decreased PaCO₂. This is commonly seen clinically in conditions such as anxiety, pain, or improper use of ventilators. The second cause is metabolic acidosis, which primarily results from excessive loss of alkaline substances in the body.
