Is exercise beneficial for the kidneys?
Exercise is beneficial for the kidneys.
The kidneys are organs located at the junction of the thoracic and lumbar spine. Suspended by muscles, they serve as both excretory and endocrine organs, producing certain hormones beneficial to the body—such as erythropoietin, which helps maintain hemoglobin levels within the normal range.
As long as kidney function is normal, moderate exercise can be beneficial. It is recommended to choose low-intensity activities such as jogging, brisk walking, or casual walking, along with gentle stretching exercises.
Individuals with impaired kidney function should avoid intense physical activity, such as sprinting or prolonged sports participation, as these place excessive strain on the body, leading to fatigue and increased sweating. Without timely fluid replenishment, such exertion may damage kidney function and potentially worsen existing kidney problems.
In addition to exercise, maintaining kidney health requires a light diet. Avoid greasy and fried foods, and consume more high-quality protein sources such as fish, chicken, milk, and eggs.
