Mortality rate of melanoma
Without treatment, the 5-year survival rate may be as low as 5%, whereas with appropriate treatment, the 5-year survival rate can reach up to 95%.
1. Without Treatment
Melanotic tumors are very common and are also known as melanoma, moles, or neurogenic nevi. They result from excessive deposition of melanin and prolonged local sun exposure of the skin. Generally, untreated melanoma patients have a poor prognosis, with the 5-year survival rate potentially as low as 5%, and the 10-year survival rate only about 40%.
2. With Treatment
Melanoma is a malignant tumor that can develop in the skin, the choroid of the eye, or the mucous membranes of the intestines. When occurring on the skin, it is usually detectable early. The overall 5-year survival rate for melanoma varies significantly. Tumors with lower malignancy tend to grow slowly. If detected early and treated surgically, followed by adjuvant therapies, there is a possibility of cure.
Patients are advised to seek medical treatment as early as possible to effectively extend their lifespan. In daily life, avoid going outdoors during peak sunlight hours and use sunscreen to prevent worsening of melanoma symptoms. Proper care should be taken to avoid scratching the affected area with hands and minimize friction to prevent further damage.
