Is costochondritis serious?
In general, costochondritis usually refers to inflammation of the costal cartilage. This condition has a high recovery rate and is typically not serious. The specific analysis is as follows:
Costochondritis may result from viral infections or chronic strain of the ligaments in the sternocostal joints. It could also be caused by pathogens such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Salmonella typhi, or Salmonella paratyphi entering the rib cartilage via the bloodstream, leading to infection. The disease generally has a high cure rate. Even without aggressive treatment—though this might lead to worsening symptoms or complications such as pneumonia—it can still be effectively treated. Therefore, costochondritis is usually not considered severe.
After developing costochondritis, patients are advised to avoid bending over, lifting heavy objects, and any trauma or falls in daily life, to prevent aggravating discomfort and interfering with recovery.
