Introduction
Headache after back massage may be caused by elevated blood pressure, cold, or trapezius muscle strain. After a back massage, the meridians in the back become unblocked, which may increase heart rate and lead to higher blood pressure, resulting in headache symptoms. In addition, it could also be due to cerebral ischemia and hypoxia. Adequate rest is recommended after receiving a back massage.

Headaches after back疏通 (clearing and unblocking) may be caused by elevated blood pressure, colds, or trapezius muscle strain.

1. Elevated Blood Pressure

After back clearing treatment, the meridians in the back may become more通畅 (unblocked), which could lead to an increased heart rate and a rise in blood pressure, resulting in headaches. This condition is usually temporary and can be monitored without immediate intervention.

2. Cold

Back clearing therapy increases blood circulation and opens local blood vessels. If proper body warmth is not maintained afterward, catching a chill may easily lead to a cold, which can also cause headaches. Under a doctor's guidance, medications such as Ganmao Qingre Granules, Ibuprofen tablets, or Zheng Chaihu Yin Granules may be used for treatment.

3. Trapezius Muscle Strain

The trapezius muscle originates at the base of the skull and along the spine. During back clearing, improper massage techniques may cause strain or injury to the trapezius muscle, leading to radiating or牵扯性 (pulling-type) pain. When necessary, acupuncture or traction therapy may help alleviate symptoms.

In addition, headaches might also result from cerebral ischemia or hypoxia. After undergoing back clearing, it is essential to keep the body warm and ensure adequate rest.
