Is an HCV antibody level of over 48 severe?
A hepatitis C antibody level of 48 U/L is not necessarily severe. The condition may be serious if the RNA test is positive, but it is generally not serious if the RNA test is negative.
1. Severe
The normal range for hepatitis C antibodies is 0–1 U/L. A result of 48 U/L significantly exceeds this normal range, warranting further evaluation to determine the severity. If both the hepatitis C antibody level is markedly elevated (48 U/L) and the hepatitis C virus RNA test is positive, this indicates an active infection with the hepatitis C virus, which is generally considered serious. Prompt treatment under a doctor's supervision with antiviral medications—such as dasabuvir tablets, velpatasvir tablets, or sofosbuvir tablets—is necessary. These medications help suppress viral replication and can effectively alleviate the condition.
2. Not Severe
If the hepatitis C antibody level is 48 U/L but the RNA test is negative, this indicates a past infection that has been cleared by the body's immune system. In this case, the condition is not currently serious.
During this time, it is important to stay relaxed and avoid excessive anxiety or stress.
