How to press the injection site after IV infusion to prevent bruising
After completing the infusion, you can prevent bruising at the injection site by adjusting the pressing location and duration. The specific procedure is as follows:
1. When removing the needle after the infusion, the nurse uses the left thumb and index finger to stabilize the silicone tube below the needle hub, while the right hand gently removes the tape securing the needle hub.
2. Place the right thumb over the tape covering the puncture site without applying pressure.
3. Quickly withdraw the needle with the left hand, and simultaneously use a cotton swab to press approximately 0.5 cm above the skin puncture site, applying pressure in alignment with the direction of the blood vessel.
4. Maintain pressure for 3–5 minutes; for patients with poor coagulation function, extend the compression time to 10 minutes.
During infusion, patients should wear loose sleeves to avoid obstructed blood return, which may cause blood to pool in the vein, prolong hemostasis, or even lead to bleeding under the skin.
