Can ice cubes be used for physical cooling in fever?
Fever usually refers to an elevated body temperature. Physical cooling methods for fever often include the use of ice packs, but proper application is important.
Elevated body temperature is commonly caused by inadequate protection against cold, leading to the body getting chilled, or it may result from viral or bacterial invasion. For mild fever, physical cooling can be chosen—wrap the ice pack in a cloth and place it on the forehead to help reduce body temperature. Note that it should not be applied for too long at once, to avoid local frostbite. Children should use it for no more than 5 minutes, while adults can apply it for about 10 minutes.
Physical cooling is suitable for low-grade fever. However, if body temperature exceeds 39°C, antipyretic analgesics should be used under medical guidance, such as acetaminophen tablets or ibuprofen sustained-release capsules. Additionally, under a doctor's supervision, cephalosporin antibiotics like cefuroxime tablets or cefixime capsules may also be prescribed.
Besides, during fever, drinking more hot water can promote heat dissipation and help expel internal heat, which is beneficial for recovery.
