What are the symptoms of a poisoned tongue?
Poisoned tongue refers to abnormal symptoms of the tongue after ingesting certain toxic substances. Symptoms may include tongue pain, swelling, and abnormal sensations, which require symptomatic treatment.
1. Tongue Pain
The tongue may feel burning, prickling, or painful. Under medical guidance, lidocaine gel can be applied topically or lidocaine mouthwash used to relieve discomfort.
2. Tongue Swelling
The tongue may swell and enlarge, potentially even obstructing breathing. Under medical supervision, oral erythromycin enteric-coated capsules or metronidazole tablets may be administered for treatment.
3. Abnormal Tongue Sensation
The tongue may feel numb, tingly, or lose sensation. Drinking plenty of water helps dilute toxins and promote their elimination. Additionally, under medical guidance, induced vomiting and gastric lavage may be used to alleviate symptoms.
Other possible symptoms include taste disturbances and discoloration of the tongue. Patients are advised to maintain a light diet and avoid spicy or irritating foods. It is also recommended to consume calcium-rich foods such as dried small shrimp, milk, sesame seeds, and almonds.
