Introduction
A scratching sensation in the throat when swallowing may be caused by physiological factors or pathological conditions, such as chronic pharyngitis or reflux esophagitis. If an individual experiences significant daily stress, it may lead to dysfunction in the esophageal area. Regular consumption of coarse or hard foods can cause abrasion to the esophageal mucosa, resulting in injury and contributing to the development of such conditions.

A scraping sensation in the throat when swallowing may be caused by physiological factors or pathological conditions such as chronic pharyngitis or reflux esophagitis.

I. Physiological Factors

If a person experiences high levels of daily stress, it may lead to dysfunction in the esophageal area. Regular consumption of coarse or hard foods can cause abrasions to the esophageal mucosa, resulting in injury and this condition. Pain typically worsens during swallowing. In most cases, the tissue can heal on its own after some time. It is recommended to avoid spicy and irritating foods.

II. Pathological Factors

1. Chronic Pharyngitis

In patients with chronic pharyngitis, prolonged stimulation of the pharyngeal mucosa by inflammatory factors leads to inflammation. Because the pharyngeal mucosa is thin and highly sensitive, a scraping sensation during swallowing may occur. Patients are advised to take medications such as Roxithromycin Capsules, Amoxicillin Capsules, or Pharyngitis Tablets under medical guidance.

2. Reflux Esophagitis

Poor dietary habits may impair the esophagus's natural defense mechanisms, allowing stomach contents to reflux into the esophagus. This causes inflammation—reflux esophagitis—and damages the esophageal lining through gastric acid exposure, leading to erosion or narrowing, thereby causing this symptom. Treatment may include medications such as Cisapride Tablets, Famotidine Tablets, or Domperidone Tablets, used according to medical advice.

Besides the common causes mentioned above, this symptom could also be caused by esophageal cancer. Patients are advised to maintain a light diet and avoid spicy or irritating foods to prevent worsening of the condition.
