Can a breast pump be used when weaning? Will it cause more milk production?
Do not use a breast pump when weaning, as it may lead to increased milk production.
Breast milk is generally produced when mammary cells are stimulated by external factors or by hormones in the body such as estrogen, progesterone, and prolactin. Using a breast pump during weaning may promote duct clearance and stimulate mammary cells, potentially causing increased milk secretion. Therefore, if breast fullness, swelling, or pain occurs due to abundant milk supply during weaning, applying warm compresses or gentle massage may help alleviate discomfort. Medications such as vitamin B6 tablets, bromocriptine mesylate tablets, or estradiol valerate tablets can also be used to suppress prolactin secretion and assist in weaning. However, medication should only be taken under a doctor's supervision.
During the weaning period, it is advisable to avoid intense physical activities to prevent strain on the breasts. Maintain a light diet and moderately reduce intake of foods high in protein and fat. Stay in a positive mood and try distraction techniques to ease any discomfort associated with weaning.
