Can a rotator cuff injury heal on its own?

Introduction
If a rotator cuff injury is caused by a minor tear, symptoms are usually mild and can gradually heal on their own through functional exercises and proper rest. However, if the rotator cuff injury presents with symptoms such as shoulder pain, weakness, restricted movement, dislocation, or fracture, healing typically does not occur spontaneously due to the severity of symptoms and the relatively poor blood supply to the rotator cuff area.

Minor rotator cuff injuries may have a chance of spontaneous recovery, but more severe cases generally cannot heal on their own.

1. Can heal:

If the rotator cuff injury is mild—such as minor tearing caused by trauma resulting in slight shoulder pain—it may gradually heal spontaneously through functional exercises and adequate rest.

2. Cannot heal:

If the rotator cuff injury results from chronic overuse, muscle rupture, or degenerative changes in the shoulder, symptoms such as shoulder pain, weakness, limited range of motion, dislocation, or even fractures may occur. Due to the severity of these symptoms and the relatively poor blood supply to the rotator cuff area, spontaneous healing is unlikely.

After sustaining a rotator cuff injury, it is recommended to promptly visit an orthopedic department at a hospital for proper evaluation using X-ray, MRI, or other relevant examinations to determine the extent of injury and receive appropriate treatment for improvement.
