Introduction
During menstruation, the uterine lining sheds and most ovarian follicles have not yet matured, so ovulation generally does not occur, making it impossible for sperm to fertilize an egg; therefore, pregnancy is unlikely. However, if sexual intercourse takes place near the end of the menstrual period without proper contraception, sperm may survive in the body for about three days. If early or additional ovulation occurs, the sperm may meet and fertilize an egg, potentially resulting in pregnancy.

Whether having sex during menstruation can lead to pregnancy depends on whether the woman is ovulating.

1. Unlikely

During menstruation, the uterine lining sheds and the uterine environment is unsuitable for embryo implantation. Additionally, most ovarian follicles have not yet matured during this period, so ovulation generally does not occur. Without ovulation, sperm cannot fertilize an egg, making pregnancy unlikely.

2. Possible

If intercourse occurs near the end of the menstrual period and no contraceptive measures are taken, sperm may survive in the body for about three days. If the woman ovulates earlier than expected or has an additional ovulation, fertilization could occur, resulting in pregnancy.

Having sex during menstruation is not recommended because the cervix is slightly open, which makes it easier for bacteria to enter the vagina and cause infections such as endometritis or pelvic inflammatory disease.
