Introduction
Eucommia ulmoides is generally known for its effects of tonifying the liver and kidneys. With a warm nature, it belongs to the category of yang-tonifying herbs and has the effect of strengthening tendons and bones. It can also warm and tonify kidney yang, treating pregnancy-related vaginal bleeding and restlessness of the fetus caused by instability of the Ren and Chong meridians, thus exerting a stabilizing effect on the fetus. Its uses include moistening dryness in the liver, replenishing liver deficiency, alleviating soreness and pain in the lower back and spine, improving dampness and itching in the genital area, and addressing fetal restlessness due to insufficiency of the liver and kidneys in pregnant women.
Du Zhong (Eucommia) generally has effects such as tonifying the liver and kidneys, strengthening tendons and bones, and stabilizing pregnancy. It is commonly used to improve symptoms like lower back pain, dampness and itching in the genital area, and restlessness during pregnancy. A detailed analysis is as follows:
I. Effects
1. Tonifies the Liver and Kidneys
Du Zhong belongs to yang-tonifying herbs. After administration, it helps nourish the liver and kidneys, making it suitable for improving symptoms caused by deficiency of the liver and kidneys, such as kidney-deficiency low back pain, weak tendons and bones, dizziness, and blurred vision.
2. Strengthens Tendons and Bones
Du Zhong has a sweet taste and warm nature, entering the liver and kidney meridians. It can be used to improve flaccidity of tendons and bones, soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees due to insufficient kidney qi or depletion of kidney essence, thus exerting a strengthening effect on tendons and bones.
3. Stabilizes Pregnancy
Du Zhong warms and tonifies kidney yang, treats deficiency of the liver and kidneys, and improves conditions such as vaginal bleeding during pregnancy and fetal restlessness caused by instability of the Chong and Ren meridians, thereby helping to stabilize pregnancy.

1. Lower Back and Spinal Ache
Deficiency of the liver and kidneys often leads to aching in the lower back and spine. Du Zhong, being sweet and warm, has a nourishing effect and enters the liver meridian, moistening liver dryness and tonifying liver deficiency, thereby alleviating back and spinal discomfort.
2. Dampness and Itching in the Genital Area
Liver and kidney deficiency may also cause dampness and itching in the genital region along with dribbling after urination. Taking Du Zhong can tonify the middle jiao and enhance vital essence, thus improving genital dampness and itching.
3. Fetal Restlessness
Pregnant women with liver and kidney deficiency are prone to fetal restlessness. Du Zhong is commonly used to regulate such imbalances and achieve a pregnancy-stabilizing effect.
In addition, Du Zhong may also be used to help manage hypertension. It is recommended to use Du Zhong under the guidance of a physician to avoid adverse reactions from self-medication.
