How to test for diastasis recti

Introduction
Diastasis recti can usually be assessed by lying flat on the back with knees bent, then pressing the hands above the navel; a gap between the rectus abdominis muscles will become visible and the distance across this gap can be measured. Color ultrasound imaging can show the shape of the rectus abdominis muscles and the space between them, thereby determining the extent of separation. Alternatively, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can clearly visualize the condition of rectus abdominis separation.

Diastasis recti can usually be detected through physical examination, B-mode ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and other diagnostic methods. The specific analysis is as follows:

1. Physical Examination

The patient lies flat on the bed with knees bent, then places both hands above the navel and gently presses down. The rectus abdominis muscles will form a depression, allowing contact with the abdominal cavity. The distance between the separated muscles can be measured based on this gap.

2. B-mode Ultrasound

Diastasis recti can also be evaluated at a professional medical facility using B-mode ultrasound. Color Doppler imaging enables visualization of the shape and separation distance of the rectus abdominis muscles, thereby assessing the extent of muscle separation.

3. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Patients may also opt for MRI, which uses magnetic fields to perform detailed body scans. This method clearly reveals the condition of rectus abdominis separation during examination, although it has certain limitations.

In addition to the common methods mentioned above, CT scanning can also be used to evaluate diastasis recti. It is recommended to strengthen abdominal muscle exercises in daily life, or combine treatments such as microwave or ultrashort wave therapy to promote recovery of the rectus abdominis muscles.
