Introduction
If the condition of a lung abscess improves, the risks associated with needle drainage surgery are not significant. Conversely, the risks are considerably higher. A lung abscess is primarily a disease caused by the continuous progression of pulmonary inflammation. If a patient has a bacterial infection in the lungs and the condition is not effectively controlled, inflammatory factors can spread extensively, leading to airway obstruction and impaired breathing.

If the condition of a lung abscess has improved, the risks associated with puncture drainage surgery are relatively low. Conversely, if the condition remains severe, the risks are significantly higher, as detailed below:

1. Low risk

A lung abscess is primarily a disease caused by the continuous progression of pulmonary inflammation. If a patient has a bacterial infection in the lungs and the condition is not effectively controlled, inflammatory factors may spread extensively, leading to airway obstruction, difficulty breathing, and symptoms such as fever and fatigue. When the affected area is small and there is only a minimal amount of pus, the risk of performing puncture drainage surgery is relatively low.

2. High risk

Puncture drainage for lung abscess is an invasive procedure. If the patient's condition is severe, with a large amount of pus in the lesion, the operation may take longer and carries a higher risk of damaging local blood vessels, potentially causing rupture and severe hemorrhage. Therefore, the surgical risk is considerably greater.

After surgery, patients should maintain body warmth and avoid spicy or irritating foods. With assistance from family members, they can also facilitate the removal of sputum from the lungs.
